Here’s the million dollar question… what even is hypnosis? And how does it work??

(okay, that was two questions, but let’s pretend we have two million dollars)

The American Psychological Associationldefines hypnosis as “a state of consciousness involving focused attention and reduced peripheral awareness characterized by an enhanced capacity for response to suggestion.”

Wow big words but… okay… what?

I like to simplify it in terms that, well, normal people use. I refer to hypnosis as: A deep, guided meditation—a relaxed, trance-like state where it’s easy to focus (and yes, this still applies to my lovebugs with ADHD!)—with an outcome attached. 

Simple as pie, right? And that outcome I mentioned is your specific goal, whether it’s:

  • 🚬 Quitting that pernicious smoking habit (weed, nicotine, or vape) that you haven’t kicked with cold turkeys, nic patches, or pinky promises that you won’t get another pack from the bodega downstairs 

  • 🥗 Liking celery! Okay, maybe not that (I love celery in soup… can’t stand her alone). But EATING HEALTHY regularly -- like you’re just as excited to eat Sweetgreen as your favorite guilty pleasure

  • 💪 Staying motivated to go to the gym and moving your body a few times a week — WITHOUT doing the classic Workout Every Day for Two Weeks Straight Then Ghost Equinox for 3 Months kinda thing

Neuroscience is unraveling the how behind hypnosis in the brain—we are finally getting some insight into why hypnosis can create such impactful transformations!!

Recent research from Stanford showed…

  1. The areas of the brain related to self-analysis are turned down—AKA, you can go with the flow more easily! You can get relaxed without your inner chatter yappin’ at ya the whole time!!

  2. The brain-body connection is enhanced, allowing your noggin to exert more control over your body and physical sensations. Trying to cool your heart rate that’s on the edge of one of *those* break downs or panic attacks? Looking to curb the physical NEED to hit your vape? This part of hypnosis helps you do exactly that.

  3. In hypnosis, you’re absorbed in the session—your brain ain’t worrying about anything else. AKA, external distractions—the dumpster truck blaring its horn at the folks double parked on your street or the big meeting you’ve been in knots over for the past few weeks—your mind lets those distractions float away in the soft, relaxing space of hypnosis

I wanna spend another minute on that last one: the “absorption” of hypnosis is HUGE for folks who say they hate meditation bc of their ADHD —

“I just can’t focus!”

Now, you might also be asking: Alrighty Emma, but what does a hypnosis session actually look like? 🤔

Im glad you asked. (Well, you didn’t, but it’s fun for me—and maybe you?—if I make this a conversation)

There are three main parts to my hypnosis sessions:

  1. Coaching

  2. Prep

  3. The hypnosis itself

🗣️ We start the session with a 45-60 minute discussion about your priority issues and goals—exploring why they’re important to you, where you’re getting stuck, and, importantly, we’ll map out a concrete action plan for how you can work towards your goals. 

✔️ Once we close the coaching portion, I’ll prep ya for hypnosis and what you can expect. This is a few minutes, but is also a place for any questions. It’s all about you getting as comfy as possible before we get started! 

🧘 And then the grand finale: hypnosis itself. 

“Okay emma but again WHAT DOES HYPNOSIS *REALLY* MEAN??”

  • Okay okay I hear you!! Hypnosis itself starts by using relaxation techniques to release tension in your body, and chillllll out your brain.

  • Next can follow a variety of vivid visualizations (maybe visualizing yourself achieving a certain goal, living without addictions, connecting with your inner child, the possibilities are endless, and it’s different for every client, every session)

  • ANNNND also—we also use empowering suggestions (this is a term we use a lot in hypnosis; suggestions are basically affirmations related to your goals “I am easily motivated to go to the gym” etc).

Then finally, we’ll end and you’ll come out of hypnosis, feeling refreshed and rejuvenated.

We debrief, and then you’re on your merry way! And this all happens in 90-120 minutes.
